Decorating your baby's nursery can be fun and exciting to some, and an absolute daunting task to others. In years past, it was expected that if you were having a girl the room would be done in pink; if you were having a boy the room would be done in blue and if you didn't know the sex of the baby, then green or yellow would suffice. The typical animal or clown borders were applied around the room and a few stuffed animals were tossed in for good measure. This was the cookie-cutter nursery and you could find one in most homes with a baby.
These days, the sky is the limit in choosing baby nursery decoration. Use your personal style (modern, rustic, bold, traditional, natural, etc.) as a jumping point and go from there. The nursery can be a great place to really have fun with your tastes and take them to a new level. In this way you can create a room that both your baby and you will love and it will still flow with the rest of the house.
Here are a few quick ideas to start you off:
- hang different sized Chinese lanterns at varying heights
- use slightly differing shades of the same neutral color and add many soft elements to create a soothing feel
- pick up old furniture at garage sales and flea markets and re-finish it in bold paint or neutral stain (non-toxic, of course) to create the look you are after
- instead of hanging a mobile, fold paper cranes or airplanes out of colored paper and hang them over the crib
- pick up vintage pieces not typically associated with baby nursery decor (like a chandelier) , and re-purpose them
Good luck and remember to have fun!
